Woody & Buzz Too Old?

I just got home from a family trip to see Toy Story 3 in 3D.  The twins have been super excited to see this since they found out there was going to be a third "Buzz movie".  I have to admit, I've been excited too.

The gang was all there for the most part:  Woody, Buzz, Mr &; Mrs Potato Head, Barbie,  Ham, Rex, Slink, Jesse, the 3 green aliens and Bullseye.  Missing were minor characters such as Bo, Etch, RC and the Toy Soliders.  While I was disappointed not to see these characters they really weren't missed in the grand scheme of things and we were introduced to new characters like:  Lotso, Ken and Big Baby.

The premise of Toy Story 3 is that Andy has grown up and is going to college.  Through a series of unexpected events our beloved toy friends end up at a daycare centre where we meet the above mentioned new characters.  But this is where I think Disney and Pixar have gone wrong.  Viewers are introduced to the ideas of dictatorships and the renderings of a "mafia-like" punishment.

In all fairness, I think Disney/Pixar was trying to appeal to the first generation of Toy Story fans.  The kids who would have seen the film when it was first released as young kids themselves.  Kids who are now grown and starting new aspects of their lives, much like Andy.

However, what Disney/Pixar didn't take into account was that the Toy Story enterprise has transcended time and has appealed to many generations of children, including my own 5 year olds, making Toy Story 3 perhaps a tad too old for them.

Of course, Pretty and Boo are raving about the film and ask when we will go to see it again.  At 5 years old they are really too little to understand the significance of the actions we've seen.  As their mother, though, I know I will be monitoring their play for the next few days to ensure their own dictatorships don't arise.

  1. Great review! I remember buying the original Toy Story for our oldest son (21), who just took his oldest daughter to see the premiere last weekend. LOL I can't wait to see it, and am now interested in the "dictatorships" that you saw.

I'm following you from BloggyMoms now! :)
