Day 29

Yay, I'm back on track.  Well, at least for now.  Last night, while Boo was at Beavers, Pretty asked if she could get Pickle ready for bed.  She helped change her diaper and get her sleepers on, then she gave her the bottle.

Girl Guide Fun and Day 28!

Last night was Bring a Friend Night at my Girl Guide meeting.  Currently we only have 2 girls registered so we told them they could bring up to 5 friends each.  We had 3 friends show up last night and I have to say, what a great group of girls!  Despite going to different schools, the girls instantly clicked and had a great time together.  We started the meeting with a game and then proceeded to a craft.

I don't know if you've ever used Shrinky Dinks; but, the girls thought it was "cool".  Basically, Shrinky Dinks is a paper that you draw on and when you put it in the oven it shrinks down and becomes hard.  You can turn it into lots of different things, but we turned them into necklaces for the girls.  Each girl got to do 2 or 3 designs and they were so original.  I wish I had gotten pictures of them; but, we had a Nemo, an orange, a pair of cherries, shoes, names and of course the Girl Guides of Canada logo, the trefoil.

We finished the evening with snacks and a couple of songs.

I'm pretty sure we will have 2 of the 3 friends sign up to become Guides.  The third girl wants to join, but has a lot of activities already going on, so I'm not sure her parents will agree.  Either way, we had a great night.

Here is my Day 28 photo for the 365 challenge, it's a shot of the trefoil necklace I made last night.

Getting Caught Up

Who knew the 365 photo challenge could actually be so difficult?  I've tried very hard to take pictures each day; but I have failed.  Here are the photos from the past few days to get me caught up.

Day 20 - No photo :(

Day 21 - Setting up my Fall Decorations

Day 22 - Showing off her cute piggies.

Day 23 - No Photo

Day 24 - Fun at the Ancaster Fall Fair!

Day 25 - No Photo
Day 26 - No Photo
Day 27 - No Photo

I'm going to try to get back on track today.  I have my Girl Guide meeting tonight, and it's "Bring a Friend" so there will be plenty of great photo ops!

When to Admit Defeat?

Mr. Twingle and I have been struggling to stay afloat for several months now.  We never seem to catch a break.  Just when we think we're getting caught up, something else happens that sends us spinning.  It's that old "one step forward, two steps back" adage coming at us; only in our case it's like one step forward, ten steps back.

I'm exhausted. I don't want to deal with it anymore.  The constant stress and Mr. T working his ass off to try to make it work.  We've talked about me going back to work part-time; but, then we have to consider we'd have 3 kids to put in daycare.  Granted, the twins would only be before and after school; but, Picklewould be full-time for another 3 years.  Would I even be able to find a job?  Would that job cover the cost of daycare or would I just be working to have someone else raise my kids?

I've considered selling our home and downsizing; but, I don't think we would qualify for a new mortgage at this point in time and there would be penalties for getting out of our existing mortgage early.

When do you admit defeat?  And when you do, do you go crawling back to mommy and daddy asking them to let you move back in until you can get back on your feet?  That hardly seems fair, especially when you've got a family in tow.  GAH, it's just so FRUSTRATING.

Sadly, there is a lesson here.  Teach your children the value of money and the importance of living within their means.  I "thought" I was good with money; but, somewhere along the way we got lost and trying to find a way back is more difficult than anything else.

Certainties in the Fall

Since becoming a mom I've realized that there are certainties in life; in fact there are certainties in the seasons.  Things that are inevitable and will happen in only a matter of time.

Once such certainty I've realized, is that back to school in the fall means sickness.  After a summer outdoors, being cooped up in a classroom wrecks havoc on the immune system.  Even though the twins have only been in school for 3 years, each Fall they bring home some sort of virus.  I've been expecting it and have prepared by purchasing extra boxes of tissue and homeopathic decongestants and cough syrups.

What I didn't bargain on, was tonsillitis.  Pretty started developing what I thought was the typical cold on Thursday.  But the poor thing woke up this morning with a temperature of 102.7 and complaining of a sore throat.  You could even hear the difference in her voice and that she was straining.

Off to the walk-in clinic we went.  Fortunately, our family doctor happened to be the doctor in the clinic and he was able to tell right away that Pretty has tonsillitis.  He said that the fever, swollen glands and white spots were tell tale signs.  He wrote us a prescription and sent us on our way; not before warning us though that she is HIGHLY contagious for two days after she begins taking the antibiotics.   So that means, no Church tomorrow and no school on Monday.  But that also means, I have to be extra diligent at keeping her away from Pickle and Boo.  Without a drug plan, one prescription is expensive; but, three will blow our monthly budget!

Oh, and one more certainty?  Mommy always gets whatever the kids bring home :c\  I can feel a sore throat starting and I'm hoping that a salt-water gargle will keep it from developing into anything more serious.

Clipa Review and Giveaway!

Being a woman and a mom I'm never without a handbag or diaper bag when I go out.  I've never been a fan of using my larger handbags when out as there is never anywhere to put them and I've always tried to live by the superstition "Don't put your purse on the floor, or you'll stay broke."  Of course, I haven't always been able to avoid putting my purse on the floor (maybe that's why I AM broke!); but, that all stops now with the Clipa!

The very nice people at Clipa offered to send me one of their products to test out.  Clipa is an instant handbag hanger and I have to say it's AWESOME!  Unlike other handbag hooks, the Clipa is large enough that it works on just about any surface AND I can use it for the diaper bag too.  No more, icky bathroom floors for my diaper bag (Goodness knows what germs I've picked up in the past).  Clipa can hold up to 45lbs and is totally chic.  It's available in many different finishes, to match almost every handbag's hardware.  Clipa is made in the US using parts also from the US which keeps jobs in North America, supporting our economy and reducing our Carbon footprint!  Not only that, but Clipa looks good.  It doesn't detract from your bag and it doubles as a bangle for those fashionistas among us.

I have looked at other handbag holders in the past, and they just don't measure up.  Clipa is my go-to handbag holder and one that I will likely be giving to my female family members as gifts this holiday season!

Clipa has very generously offered one lucky Life of a Twingle Gal reader one of their handbag hangers!

Day 18 of Project 365

As I mentioned in my previous post, we had to get up at 5:30 am this morning to be at the Twin sale before the shopping frenzy began.  The sun was just coming up and I managed to snap this with my phone while Trevor drove.

Project 365-13, 14, 15, 16 and 17

Okay, as promised here are the late photos for day's 13 through 17.

Day 13 - Pickle's playdate with her BFF.  They were born 13 days apart and this shot reminds a lot of what it looked like when the twins were little.

Day 14 - Apple Picking.

Day 15 - Daddy let Pickle listen to his iPod and she loved it.

Day 16 - Sisters snuggling.

Well, that's it.  Sorry it took so long to get them posted.  I hope you enjoy :)

Mission Accomplished!

As I've mentioned a few times over the past several weeks, I've been getting ready for the semi-annual Kids' Stuff sale put on by my local twins club, BAMOM (Bay Area Mothers of Multiples).  Despite having been a member since I learned I was pregnant with twins, this was the first time I had actually participated in the sale as a seller.

What that means is that I had 6 years worth of clothes and "stuff" to sell.  Hence the reason it took me so long to actually get ready for the sale.  Of course, we didn't sell any of Pretty's clothes as we could keep that for Pickle.  So it was really only 6 years worth of Boo's clothes and the items Pickle has already outgrown.  It actually amounted to about 1000 tagged items, 750 hangers and 12 large storage bins.  And that doesn't account for the big ticket items like the highchair, infant rockers, crib mattress, car seat, swing and exersaucer; all of which sold!

We ended up coming home with 9 bins of clothes and that's it.  I'd say we were pretty successful for our first sale.  But, I have to say I'm EXHAUSTED.  We were up fairly late last night setting up and then had to be up at 5:30 am this morning to get to the sale on time to do a last minute tidy and prepare for the shopping frenzy.  I'm glad I have 5 months to regroup before the Spring sale in April 2011!

Fall Canning Time

A few years ago, Mr. Twingle and I decided that we wanted to try our hand at making and canning homemade salsa and apple sauce.  This spring, I tried my hand at strawberry jam and this fall I'm trying homemade tomato sauce.

For some unknown reason, our tomato plants didn't fair well this year and we have very little fruit so we went to a local farm and bought a bushel of Roma tomatoes with which to make our salsa and sauce.

I made the salsa first, as I have done that already and know exactly what I need and how to go about it.

I finally moved onto the tomato sauce and boy let me tell you, it sure takes a whole lot of tomatoes and a LOT of time.  It took me 3 hours to wash, cut, hull and purée the tomatoes for the sauce.  That didn't even include the 3 hours of simmering time to get the perfect taste and desired thickness and the 30 minutes in the hot water bath afterwards to seal the jars.  But all in all, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.  I guess the true test will be whether the twins like it.

If any of you are interested in either of the recipes, please feel free to leave me a comment saying so and I'll get them to you.

Day 12 of my 365 Project

Pretty and I goofing around!

Life is Good

Life is definitely Good when wonderful people like Jennifer over at Life with the Lebedas honour you with an award!  She has very kindly bestowed upon me the Life is Good Award.  If you haven't visited with Jennifer before, definitely take a moment to do so.

In order to receive this award, I need to answer the following ten (10) questions and pass the award on to six (6) fellow bloggers.

1.  If you blog anonymously, are you happy doing that way; if you are not anonymous do you wish you had started out anonymous so you could be that way now?

No, I don't blog anonymously and I guess there are valid reasons why one might chose to do so.  Safety and protection of one's family come to mind.  But I don't believe in living in a bubble and I'm glad people know who I am.

2.  Describe one incident that shows your inner stubborn side.

Oh my, only one incident?  I guess I'd have to pick the mini-van debate.  I refused to be labelled a "soccer-mom" and get a mini-van.  I stood my ground when the lease on my Sunfire was up and we ended up getting a Saturn Vue, which I loved!  Unfortunately, we didn't bargain on having twins, so when the lease was up on the Vue I had to cave and get a van.

3.  What do you see when you really look at yourself in the mirror?

I see me.  A woman who loves her kids, who needs to lose weight and has a husband who adores her despite my faults.

4.  What is your favourite summer cold drink?

Non-alcoholic, I'd have to say cranberry mixed with sparkling soda.  It's refreshing and full of anti-oxidents.
Alcoholic, I love fruity wines.

5.  When you take time for yourself, what do you do?

I try to scrapbook.  I love working in my albums, but rarely get time to do so.

6.  Is there something you still want to accomplish in your life?  What is it?

I want to get to Europe.  I studied French and German all through school so I'd like to get to Europe to see first hand some of the architecture and cities I learned about in my studies.

7.  When you attended school, were you the class clown, the overachiever, the shy person, or always ditching school?

I wasn't really any of those things.  I didn't really have a label per se.  I wasn't with the "in" crowd, but I wasn't with the "brains" either.  I was somewhere in the middle with the "Music Geeks".

8.  If you close your eyes and want to visualize a very poignant moment in your life, what do you see?

I see the whirlwind birth of the twins.  It was unexpectedly early and chaotic, frantic and terrifying.  But, with a happy ending!

9.  Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog or are you more comfortable writing posts about other people or events?

I think it depends on the day.  I try to write reflecting my true self; but, I know I do write about other people and events too.  I blame my zodiac sign: Gemini.  It depends on which self wins out on the day I'm writing!

10.  If you had the choice to sit and read or talk on the phone, which would you choose and why?

After five (5) years working in a call centre, taking approximately 200 calls a day, I would much rather sit and read.  It's not that I don't like talking to people, I do.  But, there's just something about the phone that I can't stand anymore.  If I can't talk in person, which is my first choice, I'd much rather send an email.

6 fellow bloggers I'm passing the award on to:

{this moment}

Inspiration taken from SouleMama {this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you're inspired to do the same, leave a link to your 'moment' in the comments for all to find and see. Wishing you a beautiful weekend!

Delicious Fall Baking

One of the best parts of fall is the bold and beautiful colours in the local farms.  Apples, Pears, Pumpkins, Squash and more.

I love to bake!  I would rather bake than cook any day.  In celebration of the cooler fall temperatures and the twins returning to school I decided to bake some Pumpkin Spice muffins today.

Here is the recipe in case you want to make some delicious muffins too!

Pumpkin Spice Muffins

3 1/3 cup flour
2 tsp. baking soda
3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground ginger

Mix dry ingredients together, then add:

1 cup oil
4 eggs
2/3 cup water
2 cups pumpkin

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.

Grease and lightly flour muffin tin if not using muffin liners.

Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake for 20-30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Enjoy!

Yields approx:  24 muffins

Project 365-7

It's the first day of school for most schools in Ontario.  Pretty and Boo were very excited to start this morning as they were going to be in Grade 1 with the "big kids"!

Project 365-6

Mr. Twingle just got home after a week long stint and he was a little tuckered out.  I snapped this while he was supposed to be watching Pickle as I got dinner.  Notice Pickle's head as she crawled by the sleeping "dadda".

Project 365-5

I'm sorry I'm so late getting these up.  It was a busy weekend; but, I did manage to snap pics each day.

Busted for playing with the blinds.

Project 365-4

Well it's day 4 of project 365.  I had the twins' BFF over for a playdate today.  But, I don't know if it was the cooler weather or what, all 3 kids were not playing well or listening.  Several fights and tears.  Luckily, they seemed to work it all out by the end of the day.  A little Camp Rock 2 seemed to help, not to mention the ADORABLE baby bunny the kids found beside their sandbox.

I hope you're all having a great weekend.

Project 365-3

Day 3 done, 362 days to go!

We had spaghetti for dinner tonight and Pickle throughly enjoyed it!  Three helpings later, this is what she looked like!

Long Weekend, Wahoo!

It's the Labour Day long weekend, wahoo!  As a child I dreaded this weekend.  It meant the summer was over and school would be starting up again.  I loved school; but, I hated the idea of giving up my summer vacation.  I guess you can't have it both ways though.

As an adult, this long weekend still means the "unofficial end" of summer; but, it represents so much more.  It symbolizes the start of the fall season and of new beginnings.  I get to watch the twins take on another school year, a little bit older and a little bit wiser.  I get to watch them blossom and fill up with knowledge and it makes me so proud to watch them develop into the people they are becoming.

I try to make this long weekend extra special for the kids; something to look forward to rather than dread like I did.  The twins return from a week long stay at Nana and Papa's today.  Tomorrow, I have a surprise playdate with their BFF planned and Sunday we'll go "back to school" shopping for the very few items they actually need.  They have also been asking to go to Marineland so I might just sneak that in too.

I hope you all enjoy the long weekend with your families.  For those of you with children heading back to school, I hope it all goes smoothly and the kids have a great first week back.

Five Question Friday for September 3, 2010

Welcome everyone and Happy Friday!  I can't believe it's the third of September already; but, I welcome the long weekend.  I'm hoping to take the kids to see the air show if the weather co-operates.  What are your plans for the long weekend?

It's Friday, and that means it's time for My Little Life's Five Question Friday.  Pop on over to link up.

Rules for Five Question Friday: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear on Friday morning, at which time you "linky up"! If you don't have a blog feel free to answer the questions in the comments!

1.  What do you do when you have time to yourself?

I try to scrapbook.  I love to scrapbook; but, often don't get time to work on my albums.  So I have a table set up with everything laid out and when I get a moment I'll pop over and try to work on it.  The great thing about not having to pack it all up is I can graze by and work on it when I can.

2.  When you look out your kitchen window, what do you see?

Well, that would depend on what window I'm looking out of.
If I'm looking out the window over the kitchen sink, I'm looking at a brick wall from the house beside me.  If I look out the sliding door (or window beside it), I see my lovely backyard complete with Maple tree, vegetable garden and swing set.

3.  Who/What would you want to be reincarnated as?

I think I'd like to come back as a well loved dog.  I mean seriously, they've got it pretty good.  They eat, sleep, poop and get belly rubs.  Sounds pretty good to me!

4.  What is your biggest pet peeve about other people's kids?

Hmm, this is a tough one.  I don't think it's necessarily the kids that I have the pet peeve with, more likely the parent.  But I guess, it would have to be when we have a playdate and I give an instruction like "please, don't go upstairs when the baby is napping" and they deliberately go upstairs and INTO the baby's room waking her in the process.

5.  Regular or Diet soda?

Regular.  I don't dare drink or eat anything with aspartame or sucralose.  Those chemicals will kill you!

It's day 2 of my Project 365!  Here's today's shot:

Project 365-Day 1

Today marks the first day of project 365.  Each day I will post a picture from my everyday life.  It may not be anything exciting; but it will be a moment taken from that day.  Today's picture is of Pickle.  It's a little fuzzy, 'cause I couldn't get her to stay still long enough for the camera to focus.

Okay, so I know that's technically two pictures, but I couldn't help it!
