Call Me "Handy Woman"

Not long ago, I let the dog outside as we normally do and closed the door so she could do her business.

Afterwards, Pretty tried to open the door; but, couldn't.  Boo tried too and again no luck.  They called to me in a panic because the dog was stuck outside and they couldn't get the door open.

I figure, the door got locked and they just don't realize it.  Yet when I try to open the door the handle just spins, not catching the pin to pull the latch and open the door.

Boo goes outside to the dog run and climbs the fence to open the door from the outside; and it works.  So I think "what the devil is going on?".

I ransack Mr. Twingle's work bench and find a long necked screwdriver to take the handle apart.  Upon inspection it appears the pin got pushed in somehow causing the handle to just spin.  Not really sure how or why this happened though.  I pulled the pin back into place and refit the handle and voilĂ , we can now open the door from both directions again!

Yep, just call me the "Handy Woman"!

This whole ordeal has got me wondering about other women and moms.  Are you able to fix things around the house, or do you rely on your male partners to do all the work?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Scrappy Layouts

It took me a while; but, I finally took some pictures of the layouts I completed in my scrapbook from the Scrapboozing weekend.

All are 2-page spreads.  I hope you enjoy.

World Thinking Day 2011 #WTD11

Happy World Thinking Day to my Guiding and Scouting brothers and sisters around the world.

My little Spark & Beaver proudly wore their uniforms to school today to show their support for #WTD11 and I too sport a shirt with the Girl Guides of Canada/Guides du Canada logo on it.

I was even lucky enough to be selected to participate in the first ever Crowd Tweet on Twitter.  Here are the results of that endeavour!

Running Errands

It's is positively FREEZING today and I have a ton of errands I need to run.  Unfortunately, I can't put them off either.

You see, today I'm filling the role of "ATM" as Mr. Twingle likes to call it.  The proper term would be assistant tour manager.

In just a few moments I'll be heading out with a van full of items that I need to deliver and have replaced by others.  Of course, I need to hit the coffee shop on the way to bring a large "double, double" to the kindly gentleman who will help me unload said items since I'll have the baby with me.

Once I make the switch, I'll head to the bank and finally to the grocery store before heading home to get the baby down for her nap; hopefully!

Wish me luck, I have a feeling I'm going to need it.

Happy Family Day

For those of you in Canadian provinces that celebrate the holiday, Happy Family Day!

It's a snowy day in South-Western Ontario and so we're spending the day indoors, watching movies and baking banana bread and cookies.  Then we're going to make a delicious homemade lasagne for dinner tonight.  There's nothing better than spending time creating foods we all love together.

I hope you all enjoy your extended holiday.

Five Question Friday! 2/18/11

I cannot believe this beautiful weather!  It's a balmy +10 today and feels like Spring.  It's a welcome change from the bitter cold, that's for sure.

I have a busy weekend ahead of me.  Tomorrow I'm off to celebrate the first birthday of a handsome young man and on Sunday, the twins and I will be attending Thinking Day services at the Mount Hope United Church to honour those brothers and sisters of Guiding/Scouting around the world; and to honour our founders Lord and Lady Baden-Powell.  Following the service, I'm taking my Guide unit curling, which I'm totally excited about.

1.  Have you worn the same outfit more than one day in a row?
Of course!

My thinking is unless they are super dirty, I've spilled something, or the stink to high heaven, there's no need to make extra laundry for myself.  Especially since I often don't wear the items for a full day.  I'm in my pj's most mornings till 11am or so and by dinner I've changed into "comfy" clothes.  So my outfits don't usually get "worn".

2.  If you had to choose any LARGE city to live in, which would it be?
I guess that depends on your definition of large.  Brampton is a large city in my books and I was raised there; so I guess that would be my answer.

3.  Fly or drive with the kids on vacation?
Fly I think.  Although, I've never actually done it, I think a one-time flight would be better than the frequent stop and goes of a car ride.

4.  What is your idea of "spring cleaning"?
Being able to open the windows and give the screens a good clean and toss any clutter that has accumulated; in addition to the usual cleaning routine, is a good spring clean in my books!

5.  What is the best book you have ever read?
I read a LOT.  It would be really hard for me to pick any one book as the best book I've ever read.  Although, I do like the classics and one that I go back to time and again is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

So that's me in a nutshell.  What have you got to say?

How Do You "Valentine's Day"?

Mr. Twingle and I have been together for fourteen years, even though we've only married for seven of those.  Yet in those fourteen years, we have only had one Valentine's Day together.  Since he travels so much with work, he is often on the road or in another country when the day of love rolls around.  Thus, Valentine's Day really has no meaning for us.

Now call me a hopeless romantic; but, I like Valentine's Day.  Yes, the greeting card companies have taken the idea of the day to new heights; but, the sentiment is still the same.  It's a day to go above and beyond to show that special someone how much they mean to you.  That doesn't however mean you need to go out and break the bank in doing so.  Yes, I would love to get roses from Mr. Twingle on Valentine's Day; but, if he were to drop that kind of dough on a bouquet of flowers I'd clobber him!

As I was making cards for the twins to hand out to their classmates, I got to wondering about Valentine's Day with your kids.  What do you do to make the day special?  Do you buy your children something, becoming party to the commercialism or o you do something else?

Here are a few ideas on how I plan to make this Valentine's Day special for my family, without spending money:

  • make them a Valentine's Day card from existing craft supplies around the house
  • cook them heart shaped pancakes or eggs for breakfast
  • cut their lunch sandwiches into heart shapes
  • send a "love note" in their lunchbox
  • above all else, tell them "I LOVE YOU"
Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

This is the Cough that Never Ends...

...Yes it goes on and on my friends.  Sound familiar?  My personal adaptation of the [annoying] childhood song, "The Song that Never Ends".   In my case however, it is the cough that never ends.  We are going on a month and a half with this annoying, hacking cough.  I just can't shake it and even the doctor has said I just need to let it run its course.  Ugh.

This is the downside to having children in school full-time.  They sit in an incubus of disease six and a half hours a day, five days a week.  It's inevitable that they will catch one of the many viruses going around and bring it home to share with the rest of the family.  Luckily, this forces our immune systems to get nice a strong.

The only saving grace about this never ending cough, is that Pickle hasn't become ill.  The other four of us have all had this nasty, lingering cough; but, she has remained healthy (knock on wood).

For those of you looking for natural immunity boosters, this was recommended to me by my Naturopathic Doctor:

Add 1 wedge of lemon, 1 tsp honey and 2 dashes cayenne pepper to 1 cup hot water and drink every morning.

You can't even taste the pepper and it works.  I get far fewer colds than I did before starting this regime.

Cheers, and here's hoping you stay healthy for the rest of the season.

Scrappin' Weekend with my BFF

I love my BFF.  We've been friends since Junior High and have been there for each other through life's ups and downs.

Sadly, we don't get to see enough of each other.  We only live about an hour away; but, with kids and jobs and everyday lives tend to get in the way.  Luckily though, when we get together it's like no time has passed at all and we can just catch up where we left off.

That is why I'm super excited about "Scrapboozing" this weekend!  Yes, that's scrap-boozing, not scrapbooking.  You see, we get together to scrapbook; but, inevitably the booze comes out and we get silly.  Oddly enough, our scrapbook pages tend to be that much better when we've had a few too many to drink :\

Normally, our scrapboozing weekend occurs in the summer when we have our annual girls weekend at the cottage.  However, we haven't had our girls weekend in two years due to births and weddings among us and so my BFF has decided it's been too long and is hosting Scrapboozing 2011 at her place.

It will commence Saturday around noon and end sometime on Sunday!  Not only is this an awesome chance to hang with my best gal pals; but, I get to work on my much neglected scrapbook!

I simply can't wait.  Only two more sleeps!  Yay!

Snow Day!!!

I think it's hilarious that last week's Five Question Friday asked about Snow Days and today, we have one!

In Southern Ontario we have been under a blizzard warning since yesterday afternoon.  We woke this morning to find the swing and tire swing on our play set almost completely buried in the snow.

Of course the twins could NOT wait to get outside and play despite the frigid temperatures.  We held them off until just a few minutes ago.  Mr. Twingle got them all bundled up so they could enjoy the fresh flakes.  Then he got himself dressed so he could play too, LOL!

It's much too cold outside today for the baby, so I'm indoors with her; but it looks like my three big kids are having fun.

I hope those of you home on this Snow Day are enjoying quality family time and taking advantage of the day off.

Stay warm.
