Saying Goodbye

It's never easy to say goodbye to a loved one.  It's especially hard for a child when that loved one is their pet fish.
Last night, as the kids were brushing their teeth for bed, Boo looked upon his Beta fish, Fishy, to find him in that tell-tale sideways float at the bottom of the tank.  He wasn't quite dead, making the odd sporadic jerk, and poor Boo was completely distraught and unwilling to accept that Fishy was all but gone.  It took some convincing and even taking the fish out of the tank in the net without any fight, that Boo finally agreed to send Fishy on to his watery grave via flush.
We said a few kind words, but before doing so, Boo asked me to take a photo of Fishy for him to remember him by.  I wasn't quite sure what to say to that; but as Fishy wasn't completely dead yet, it didn't seem entirely morbid.
Boo then cuddled up in his bed, with tears in his eyes and snuggled with a very old stuffed toy that he hasn't bothered with in a long time.  It was rather heartbreaking to watch.
I'm worried now about how the twins will handle it when their hamsters die.  If Boo was this upset over the fish, it's going to be a very difficult experience when Jolly expires.  Hopefully, that won't be for some time yet.  I will be sure to get lots of photos of the twins' hamsters before their short lives come to an end.

Keeping the Cost of College Down.

It may only be mid-July; but back-to-school shopping and preparations have already begun.  For those heading off to college this year, it can be a daunting and costly adventure.  Tuition prices are high and the cost of text books is just crazy.  I dread having to send my three kids to college or university.  It’s definitely going to be tough.
That’s why I’m glad for businesses like Campus Book Rentals.  This great online business allows for students to save 40-90% off bookstore prices and has free shipping, both ways!  They have flexible renting periods and they even donate to Operation Smile with each textbook rented.  How great is that, you get to save on your course books, and they give back to a wonderful organization?
My one concern when I came across Campus Book Rentals was about study habits.  As a university student, I highlighted my textbooks when I came across key elements I wanted to remember or reference.  Surely a rental text book company would set forth guidelines prohibiting such an activity.  However, I was mistaken.  Students are free to highlight the texts, just as they would if they had purchased them.
I know that when my three kids start their post-secondary educations, I’ll be checking out Campus Book Rentals as an option to costly textbook purchases!

When the Kids Are Driving You Crazy...

...clean!
Yep, it's just one of those days.  The three kids are bouncing off the walls; and NO, I did not feed them sugar.
I've had a headache for two days that nothing is touching and so the kids' behaviour is not putting me in the best of moods.
I realized after I yelled at the two year old for something utterly ridiculous that I needed to put myself in mommy time out.
So, I'm cleaning.  I've gotten one and a half bathrooms cleaned and I'm in the process of sweeping floors so they can be mopped.  I've got laundry washed and hanging outside to dry and another load in the washer.

Who would have thought that obnoxious children + a headache would = productive chores day?

Five Question Friday for July 20, 2012 on Saturday

What a week.  The weather has been decent, not too hot.  We finally got some rain yesterday; but still not nearly enough.

The kids are fairly well despite being stuck at home and we've only suffered one small wound; the pool was attacked by the dog and now has a hole in one of the inflatable rings.  All in all, summer is going well right now.

It's finally Friday and that means it's time for Five Question Friday!

1.  What do you call them - flip flops, sandals, thongs or slippers?
We're a flip flop family here.  It's how we differentiate between those and more substantial sandals.  I love hearing Pickle say "fipfop" as she searches around for mine to wear around the house.

2.  Are you a "my kids can do no wrong" kind of mom, or a "Johnny punched you?  Well what did you do to him first?!" kind of mom?
I'm definitely the latter.  I know my kids are no angels and don't pretend they are.  What really gets my goat is the parents that are the "my kids can do no wrong" type and don't apologize for their kids behaviour, even when the kids owns up to it.

3.  Would you confront a good friend that looked/looks down on your husband/significant other?
Definitely!  Being my friend means respecting my decisions regardless of how you feel about them.  If you don't like my husband, or look down on him, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.  But I don't want or need to hear about it.

4.  Biggest pet peeve?
Gosh, this is a hard one.  I have so many pet peeves I don't think I can pick just one.
The one that stands out at the moment is people that stop in front of an entry way to gab with someone they've chanced upon.  Um, take your conversation to the side and allow people to pass, please and thank you!

5.  What's your favourite take-out meal?
We rarely get take-out, but if and when we do I want Chinese.  We have found a tiny little place here that has a large selection of really good Chinese food.  It's not cheap and we're lucky to get it once a year; but we thoroughly enjoy it when we do!

Have a great weekend!

Weekend of Champions

This past weekend was a whirlwind of lacrosse games, family visits and more lacrosse games.  It was the Hamilton Minor Lacrosse Association's championship weekend.  Boo has been playing all season and working to prepare for this weekend.  Even though it's only house league, a lot of parents take it pretty seriously.

Boo's team in the "Rock".  In Hamilton, all the house league teams are named after professional, NLL, lacrosse teams.  Their first game was Friday night against the Roughnecks.  Despite a rocky start, the Rock pulled off a win, defeating the Roughnecks 13-7.  Playing the Roughnecks is always fun for Boo as one of his classmates is on that team and so they have a good, healthy, all-in-fun, rivalry between them.

We headed back to the arena for 10am Saturday morning where the Rock faced the Rush.  My parents came down to watch the tournament and show Boo their support.  Papa even donned Boo's Toronto Rock hat to route for the Rock!  It was a rough game with a  few penalties being given.  We lost 6-9, but the Rush outplayed us fair and square.  After the game, we came  home for lunch and so Boo could relax in the A/C before yet another game at 3:00pm.
The afternoon game went much better for the Rock.  We defeated the Bandits 10-0 and Boo even scored a goal!  In his four years of playing, he's only scored one other goal and I wasn't there to see it.  Needless to say, this mama got all choked up and teary when he scored.

After the game, we came home to enjoy a delicious BBQ'd ham dinner that Mr. Twingle grilled up for us.  He put a homemade glaze concoction on the ham, and it was SO good.  A very tried Boo went to bed shortly after dinner as he was tired from his long, hot and sweaty day.

Sunday morning, we were back at the arena for 10 again for our Semi-Final game against the Roughnecks.  Again, it was a close game, but we snuck out a win 8-7.  It was especially gruelling when Boo's classmate took a bad hit and was down for several minutes.  Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, just winded.  As a parent, though, seeing a kid that age laying on the floor not moving after a hit, is really hard.  My stomach was churning and he wasn't even mine.  I can't fathom how I'll feel if/when Boo ever gets hit like that.  Boo had a really good game with a couple shots on net, none went in, but the photographers got some great shots of him anyway.

Due to our Semi-Final win, we were back at the arena for 4pm where we met with the Rush in the Championship game.  The Rock got off to a great start, taking the lead 2-1; but they ran out of steam about half-way through the second period and ended up losing 7-9.  It was a tough loss, no doubt, as the boys played hard.  But as was the case the first time we met the Rush, they simply out played us.  You can tell that the coaching team for the Rush worked with them on passing, defence, and even catching passes.  So even when they tired, they still had the skills to be able to play a good game.  Our boys, just didn't have the same skills and the Rush deserved the win.

Boo had a great season.  He says he doesn't care about the loss because he had fun and that just makes my heart sing.  I'm so proud of my boy for having the right attitude.  Don't we always strive to teach our kids that "win or lose, it's how you play the game"?  It seems Mr. Twingle and I have done something right!

Here are a few shots from the award presentation at the end of the game.  Congratulations on a great season Tyke Rock.  Can't wait for 2013!!!

Tuesday Ponderings

As I sit in my backyard watching the kids play I contemplate the decisions that have brought me to this point in my life.
In my youth and certainly even my early adulthood, I pictured my life differently. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy in my life. I have a loving husband and three great kids. Yes, any of the above may drive me to drink on any given day; but, I wouldn't change it.

Somehow though, I never pictured myself in the role of a stay-at-home mom, struggling to get one child caught up to grade level in school and dealing with the every day dilemmas bestowed upon a single income family of five. I always thought I would be a working parent, contributing to the family budget and providing my kids with quality family experiences and traditions for a happy childhood and ultimately a happy life.

I have come to the conclusion in the seven and a half years since becoming a mother, that some parents are better parents when they work outside the home. I think I would be one of those parents. There are many days when I look at my kids and think "I'm failing as a parent". That's not to say my kids are horrible. On the contrary, despite their somewhat obnoxious tendencies, they are pretty good kids. Any one of them would give you the shirt off their backs if you needed it, unprompted. So I must be doing something right. But, I feel like there is so much more I could give them, teach them, let them
experience.
I feel like somewhere in these last seven years, I've lost myself. I don't know who I am without the kids anymore. I think I'm feeling burnt out, which is what has prompted this post to begin with.

There is one thing I am absolutely confident of, and that is I am not alone. I'm sure there are many others in similar situations around the world, dealing with the same feelings and shortcomings.  I'm not really sure what I wanted to accomplish by writing this, but there it is, for all to read and maybe even feel better about their lives knowing they too are not alone.

A #50BookPledge Update

It seems like it's been forever since I've done an update as to my #50BookPledge progress.  In fact, it has been long enough that I don't even remember what my last update was.

I think my 50 Shades post was meant to be an update, and turned into more of a review.

I'm currently reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.  I'm really enjoying it; but, as I don't own an e-reader and I'm using my iPhone to read it on iBooks, it's taking longer than I'd like.  It's so hard to read for a long period of time when the font is so small.  Maybe one day I'll have expendable income to buy an e-reader, or maybe I'll win one.  In the interim, reading ebooks on my phone is slow going.
I'm also reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling, for about the third or fourth time.  It's a good light read, that I can take to bed with me when I need something to help me fall asleep.

So here's where things stand to date:

1.  Hunger Games
2.  Catching Fire
3.  Mocking Jay
4.  Destined
5.  The Perfect Christmas
6.  Angels at Christmas
7.  How the Girl Guides Won the War
8.  The Flight of Gemma Hardy
9.  Ghosts of Boyfriends Past
10.  Rainshadow Road
11.  Divergent
12.  Spellbound
13.  I've Got Your Number
14.  A Walk Across the Sun
15.  Dead Reckoning
16.  50 Shades of Grey
17.  50 Shades Darker
18.  Insurgent
19.  50 Shades Freed
20.  Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
21.  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I have definitely slowed down in my progress and it could be a challenge fitting in all 50 books if I don't pick up the pace.  I still think I can do it, it will just be more difficult than originally anticipated.

So how are you doing on your #50BookPledge?  Feel free to link up so others can see how you're doing too!

BeeSavy benefits for online retailers:

It's a win-win-win. With most forms of marketing, online retailers must pay upfront with no guarantee of results; however, with cost-per-sale marketing, online retailers only pay BeeSavy when it generates a sale. Online retailers choose a commission rate that fits within their profit margin, thereby ensuring a positive return on their marketing dollars. By giving most of this commission to the purchasing customer as a cash back rebate, BeeSavy utilizes this online retailer marketing method to save its customers money that traditional comparison shopping websites cannot match (due to their cost-per-click revenue model).

One lucky winner will receive an iPad 3rd Generation, 16GB Unit from BeeSavy!
